A humorous, some might say irreverent, take on, amongst other things, tarot reading guides and the reasons people go to such seances.The psychological basis seems sound.Our girl grew up with a trickster mother and learned a lot about tricking greedy people to part with their cash.She obviously loved her black con-man stepfather, whose words of advice get quoted here and there.Her mother has been murdered and left her a shop and some money. Our girl wonders why her unloving mother went to the trouble of finding out her new name and then putting her in the will; they had not been in touch for over twenty years and the mother had a semi apprentice living with her.What sort of trick was her mother really up to, is the recurring question.We see our girl asking who might have killed her mother, but also watch as, during that search, she is prepared to give an old woman back jewellery her mother pretended to cleanse of an evil influence while in reality pawning it.Then someone starts to threaten her: she is asking too many questions about trickery.Each chapter has a picture of a tarot card and tongue in cheek interpretation. It's not easy writing funny, but this book made me smile or laugh several times. The writing is crisp and clean, the characters are interesting and well-drawn, and the story moves at just the right pace to keep you turning pages. It's edited pretty well, though I'll point out that "mantle" is something you wear and "mantel" is the one over the fireplace. ;) A minor quibble, but I edit books, and I notice these things. Two or three missing words, too; no biggie. Recommended for a fun, fast read. I finished it last night and immediately picked up the second in the series.
