Ebook About From the acclaimed author of The Bastard of Istanbul, a colorful, magical tale set during the height of the Ottoman EmpireChosen for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall’s “Reading Room” Book ClubIn her latest novel, Turkey’s preeminent female writer spins an epic tale spanning nearly a century in the life of the Ottoman Empire. In 1540, twelve-year-old Jahan arrives in Istanbul. As an animal tamer in the sultan’s menagerie, he looks after the exceptionally smart elephant Chota and befriends (and falls for) the sultan’s beautiful daughter, Princess Mihrimah. A palace education leads Jahan to Mimar Sinan, the empire’s chief architect, who takes Jahan under his wing as they construct (with Chota’s help) some of the most magnificent buildings in history. Yet even as they build Sinan’s triumphant masterpieces—the incredible Suleymaniye and Selimiye mosques—dangerous undercurrents begin to emerge, with jealousy erupting among Sinan’s four apprentices.A memorable story of artistic freedom, creativity, and the clash between science and fundamentalism, Shafak’s intricate novel brims with vibrant characters, intriguing adventure, and the lavish backdrop of the Ottoman court, where love and loyalty are no match for raw power.Book The Architect's Apprentice: A Novel Review :
The story line is interesting with the Ottoman history as a background. However, the characters are not well connected to the events, to other characters, and have no impact on the story line. Although this is a fictional history novel, the timeline is changing according to the character. Although the writer admits changing the dates of some events, but it has no weight on the story and how it connects to the characters. The main title, which is about the relationship between the apprentice and the architect, doesn’t bring any value to the events, nor the characters. Is it a love story? or a learning experience? the character of the elephant trainer/apprentice is touching lightly on almost every event mentioned during that period, without any focus or an impact on the character itself or its connection to others. As an avid reader of all Shafak's books, this book doesn't come close to her other publications. The book, however, brings a great descriptive language, which makes it a good choice for young-adults. The woman in our book group who selected this book confessed tonight that after reading it she was thinking she really had to bring in a great dessert to compensate for her selection. Of course, the 'rona's here and nobody's going to any in-person book group meetings,, although she did say she envisioned driving to everyone's house and delivering a delicacy--baklava, perhaps. As it turns out nobody thought it was as bad as that, but neither did anyone want to go much further than that.Like all historical novels The Architect's Apprentice gives us a view into an unfamiliar setting and time. It's set in sixteenth century Istanbul and tells the story of a (fictional) apprentice studying under a (historical) architect, Mimar Sinan, a contemporary of Michelangelo who is credited with nearly four hundred buildings in Turkey during his almost century-long life. The scope of the story, almost all within the tightly constricted environment of Istanbul, is impressive. On the other hand, at least two of the members of my group thought the most credibly drawn character was the elephant the main character is charged with caring for. The other characters are pretty thin and one-dimensional, almost as though this were YA fiction. The narrative is unwieldy, in part because of the side plots that distract from the main plot and some of which wind up just getting dropped. The quality of the writing is weak. The author is Turkish but wrote this in English, and there are too many clunky constructions or just plain cliches, which may betray a lack of sophistication in her command of English. Finally, most of the main conflicts in the novel are resolved in the last thirty-five pages, but none of the explanations are supported by evidence earlier in the text.I enjoyed reading it, it wasn't drudgery or anything, but by the end I don't think there is anything substantial here. I gave it two stars, but it should probably be two and a half.
